Early Medieval Danish[]

Background[]

Using the Early Medieval Danish in MEG[]

The Danes are all about getting large groups of superior 2HCC troops (the Huscarls) into contact with pretty much anything.

You can choose to take the Huscarls as formed flexible (good for protecting flanks), cavalry (why would you though) or in the shield wall as tribal close, with shieldwall and integral shooters.

The shield wall version is probably the best option. Filling in rear ranks with bondi (poor short spear, shield wall, integral shooters) or best bondi (the same, but average) gives the huscarls more staying power at the cost of more damage from KABs and rear attacks.

You could take a shieldwall of 9 bases, 3 huscarl, 3 best bondi and 3 bondi, but that may well be asking for trouble as once the crunchy exterior has been removed, the rest is alarmingly squidgy. 6 huscarls and 3 bondi gives enough resilience that your enemies really need to cut through most of the huscarls before they get to squidgy underbelly, this is a good thing.

You are limited to 18 bases of huscarls, so you need to make sure they are doing all the fighting, and not too much of the dying.

Allies[]

Covering flanks is difficult as the best cavalry available in the list is from regrading huscarls, so an ally is useful. Feudal German can provide you with a couple of TUGs of early knights (short spear, dev charge, melee expert).

The internal Wend ally gives you more tribal foot, skirmishers and a single TUG of useful cavalry.

Medieval Danes as Allies[]

Once upon a time this list provided a killer ally contingent, but recent restrictions have made them a less overpowering ally, as allied TUGs cannot be mixed shieldwall units, you cannot have more TUGs of Huscarls than best bondi, and the Huscarls are limited to TUGs of 6.

Having said that 2 lots of 6 huscarls and 2 lots of Bondi are still an effective source of damage and work well together with a single general (no mixed up commands of tribal foot and formed cavalry who do not know what they need to do)

Troops and suitable miniatures[]

Huscarls - you are probably looking for something in mail with a big axe and possibly a shield
