Background[]

Using the Achaemenid Persian Royal Army in MEG[]

You have a lot of shooting, with the potential for a fairly large amount of foot with skilled shooting. This is quite useful. This list has the only compulsory Excpetional TUG in the lists with the guard cavalry.

There are a couple different approaches you can take with this army

Lots of foot shooters with cavalry support[]

You are trying to get as many Immortals on the board as you can. As you can only regrade up to half the sparabara as Immortals, you are aslo going to have a lot of sparabara as well. Both the sparabara and Immortals are good in a bow fight as the pavise gives them a 1 colour downgrade on anyone trying to shoot at them, so most shooters are throwing black dice. The sparabara are then throwing white back and Immortals green. This will rapidly become a one sided fight.

The pavise also helps in impact against infantry, so between the shooting and the impact you can make quite a mess of any infantry trying to get into the bows, and you will need to as once they are in melee all you have going for you is being protected.

If your enemy comes at you with cavalry, you are probably in quite a bit of trouble as you have no factors on impact or in melee, and you are unlikely to slow a cavalry charge enough with your shooting.

Studding the line with some of the hoplites available (all either combat shy or poor) can make cavalry think twice, and may give you enough protection to make them try to be more clever than barrelling in on turn 2.

This means you need to make good use of the decent Iranian cavalry and exceptional guard cavalry to keep the flanks secure.

Lots of cavalry with foot shooter support[]

Speaking of decent cavalry, there is enough available to make a more than competent horse archer army, with a couple of TUGs of sparabara to act as support. Adding in the Early Scythian or Saka ally can really push that shooting style army.

Allies[]

Median Empire allies do not really add much as you are getting a mix of spearmen, bowmen and cavalry. Early Scythian or Saka allies turn you into a full on horse archer army, with the addition of extra flexible cavalry and some skilled shooters.
